Purpose
To ensure all workers receive a consistent site induction and that regular toolbox talks are delivered to maintain health and safety awareness on construction sites.
Scope
All workers, contractors, and visitors on construction sites. Site supervisors and PCBUs responsible for conducting inductions and toolbox talks.
Procedure steps
Pre-arrival
Confirm all workers have current relevant certificates (e.g. Site Safe passport, first aid, trade licences). Prepare site-specific hazard register and emergency plan.
Site induction
Cover: site rules, emergency procedures (muster point, first aid kit location, fire extinguisher location), hazards specific to this site, PPE requirements, reporting procedures.
Sign-on
Every worker signs the induction register before commencing work. Keep records on site for the duration of the project.
Toolbox talk — weekly minimum
Conduct a toolbox talk at the start of each work week minimum. Topics should rotate: working at height, plant safety, hazardous substances, manual handling, fatigue, near-misses.
Record keeping
Document each toolbox talk: date, attendees (signatures), topic covered, issues raised, actions committed. Retain for duration of project plus 7 years.
Near-miss reporting
Workers must report all near-misses without fear of blame. Log in your incident register. Review at next toolbox talk.
